Are you a pilot or know a pilot that can never find a good priced watch? Is it also difficult to find one that has all the functions and doesn’t look gregarious? The Seiko SNA411 Flight Alarm Chronograph Watch may be answer to your prayers.

“I wore it to work one day, and a female coworker remarked,”your watch is gorgeous!” and that she was looking for one like it for her husband. And when I told her the price she couldn’t believe it.”

The round black dial features large luminous hands and markers and three sub-dials. The stainless steel bezel is bidirectional and has a rotating slide-rule for making various calculations. The fold-over-push button clasp is on a stainless steel link band.

It is a very beautiful and classy looking timepiece. It’s functions are easy to use and read. This watch looks quite expensive and usually results in many interested and jealous comments being made. However, you have to manually correct the date for months with less than 31 days. The stopwatch minute hand can’t be set to zero on some of these watches. The three buttons on the side can also dig into your skin and be uncomfortable.

Seiko SNA411 Features:

  • Quality Japanese-Quartz movement
  • Hardlex crystal
  • Case diameter: 42 mm
  • Stainless-steel case; Black dial; Date function; Chronograph functions
  • Water-resistant to 660 feet (200 M)

Seiko SNA411 Customer Review:

“I collect watches but am very picky because I am relatively short and have a small wrist. Most of my watches are custom fit for my wrist. I was reluctant to buy this watch because chronographs are notoriously bulky and adjusting them can be a pain.

However, as soon as I received this watch I knew it was the best purchase I’d ever made for a timepiece. Everything from the casing to the way the watch was packaged was perfect. The craftsmanship is unmatched, the watch has more tools on it than you’ll ever need, and best of all the diameter was only slightly bigger than some of my other watches (also only slightly taller because of the slide rule). Overall, this is a great deal especially for the price. Similar chronographs cost as much as $3,000.00 USD.

The alarm function is a bit tedious to set up, but I never use a watch as an alarm because I need something more powerful. Small watch alarms simply aren’t practical.

Aesthetically, it is one of the most beautiful timepieces I’ve ever purchased and it is a great addition to my collection of chronographs. I am so happy with this watch that I have to stare at it every 10 minutes because it is such a cool accessory!”

Seiko SNA411 Pros:

  • Slide-rule function is fantastic for multiplication, division, ratios and all that fun stuff
  • Lots of features, but still a relatively small and neat watch (Clean interface)
  • Very accurate timekeeping
  • Quiet movement
  • Feels substantial and comfortable on the wrist

Seiko SNA411 Cons:

  • Fine details might test the vision of some users

Seiko SNA411 Summary:

The features of Seiko SNA411 watch are well worth the price. It can be used for many different purposes and it still very stylish. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives of purchasing this watch. The materials of the watch are first class, the customer feedback is almost all positive and the watch looks fantastic.

But sometimes even if everything looks good when your about to buy a watch, you hesitate a bit. So try and imagine how the watch would make you feel when it’s on. Hopefully when you wear it you’ll do a double take and smile to yourself when you see it in the mirror.

Every timepiece collector should own at least one automatic dive watch. But, with so many choices which is the best? That is simple: the Seiko skx779 “Black Monster” Automatic Dive Resin Strap Watch.

The round black dial is surrounded by a stainless steel case and a hardlex crystal. It features Lumibrite bezel, markers and hands that make it easy to read. The bezel is on-way rotating and can keep track of elapsed time. The watch simply winds itself with the motion of your wrist.

“This watch puts any bulky Breitling or similar overpriced watches to shame, for the simple reason that the watch is a durable great looking watch and its better to save a few THOUSAND dollars.”

The day/date is easy to read. The stainless steel band is unique because it offers a triple safety clasp and a wetsuit deployment clasp. It is a genuinely a great value. Although, some have had problems winding it and to swing it for a long time. Also, it quits or freezes quite frequently. This watch needs to be cleaned well after going in salt water.

Seiko SKX779 Features:

  • Movement – 21 Jewel Self Winding Automatic Movement
  • Water Resistant – 200Meters(660 feet) Water Resistant
  • Case Diameter – 46 MM
  • Crystal – Hardlex Crystal

Seiko SKX779 Customer Review:

“The ‘Black Monster’, as it is officially called by Seiko, is a fantastic, durable watch. Be advised that the size of it may look deceiving. It is a large watch – bulky and big. The band is large and can fit those who have a hard time with standard size watches. The face is magnified so it is very easy to read with the glow features. This watch puts any bulky Breitling or similar overpriced watches to shame, for the simple reason that the watch is a durable great looking watch and its better to save a few THOUSAND dollars.

I like that the bezel is off center so its comfortable and doesn’t get in the way of your wrist.
Everything about this watch is durable. I never plan to wear it for scuba diving but the quality is there. It’s obvious.

The only con is that I did not buy it sooner.
Make a smart purchase and save the money over those overpriced competitors. Get rich in 20 years putting that money away. Your Black Monster will probably still be working too.

Good Luck!”

Pros:

  • Very well designed watch, looks fantastic (if you like monstrous things!)
  • Bezel alignment and movement is perfect
  • Very strong, durable and comfortable band
  • Dial is made out of “hardlex” (Scratch resistant and shatter resistant)

Cons:

  • Might run a few seconds fast per day (This is expected with no quartz movment)

Seiko SKX779 Summary:

The Seiko SKX779 Black Monster watch has a bold design and a great low price. It set the trend for dive watches that have followed. It’s pretty hard to find any negative feedback about this watch, it’s one of those pieces that just does its job well.

Buying it online only adds to the joy with low prices. A fantastic watch,  highly recommended for divers or anyone wanting to make an impact.

The round black dial is shielded by a hardlex window. Both the hands and markers are luminous and easy to read. They are set in a gold-toned stainless steel bezel that is bidirectional.

The dial also has three sub-dials and a date window on the number three. The link band is gold-toned stainless steel that features a fold-over-push-button-clasp-with-safety (strong and reliable).

The great thing about this watch is that the bezel is a slide rule that can perform many math and navigational calculations. Also, you are able to tell international time with the alarm hands. It offers a great fit and a stunning design.

This watch is rather hefty in size and weight, might rule out those with a skinny wrist. The stem can also come out too easily and can causes date and time issues in some cases.

Seiko SNA414 Features:

  • Quality Japanese-Quartz movement
  • Hardlex crystal
  • Case diameter: 41 mm
  • Gold-tone-stainless-steel case; Black-and-gold dial; Date function; Chronograph functions
  • Water-resistant to 330 feet (100 M)

Seiko SNA414 Customer Review:

“Like most gold watches, a bit blingy – but 30″ with a scotchbrite pad removed the worst of it from the bracelet. Amazing attention to detail – you need a magnifying glass to see it all, beautifully crisp. In the shade, the subdials blend into the background, making the main hands easy to read at a glance. In direct light, the gold on the subdials reflects, and gives excellent contrast. I like the way the hands on the subdials extend beyond the center – it makes them easier to read with 50 yr old eyes.
I used a previous version (an SEH010) years ago when flying to do time distance calculations. Nowadays, everyone has a digital computer to do it for them – but these watches are a fond memory for aging fliers like myself.

The crystal curves above the rim, so it probably will be easy to scratch. The locking pushbuttons are a bit silly – no one should use this for diving – but they work fine. It has solid endlinks, so no rattling of a loose bracelet. The bracelet stays 21mm wide, and has thick links, giving good balance on the wrist.

Not for everyone, but I love it. I can even read the stopwatch part while running, although I would prefer a 30 min subdial to a 60 min one…oh well. Still, a great watch at an amazing price!”

Pros:

  • Very manly and macho watch
  • Dripping with features and function
  • Great visibility (Although the info on the outer rim is very small, no way around this though)

Cons:

  • Stop watch seconds hand sometimes sets up with wrist movement
  • Some feel that the alarm is too low in terms of sound level
  • Size of the watch will look silly on skinny wrists

Seiko SNA414 Summary:

It is a very attractive timepiece and will get a lot of attention. The extra features are well worth the price. For some reason the Seiko SNA414 watch kind of reminds me of the death star. The dial is packed with an immense amount of detail and complexity, but it still manages to read well.

Another great watch from a great company.

seiko sna414 on wrist

The two-tones of stainless steel and gold-tone make it eye-appealing. The round watch dial is grey and oversized and is accented by three subdials. The band is a combination of brushed and polished stainless steel with gold-tone accents between the links. The bezel is stainless steel. It also features gold-tone (not gold plating) luminous hands and a date marker at three o’clock.

Some people complain that it is difficult to read the hands against the background. Also, setting the alarm is a little tricky and takes practice. This watch is a little heavier than most other watches.

On the positive side, the band is comfortable and easy to clasp and unclasp. It is very reliable and ready to use out of the box, so you can start impressing your friends straight away!

Seiko SNA548 Features:

  • Reliable Japanese-quartz movement
  • Strong scratch resistant sapphire crystal
  • Case diameter: 40 mm
  • Stainless-steel case; brown-and-black dial; chronograph functions
  • Water resistant up to 330 feet (100 M)

Seiko SNA548 Customer Comments:

I had to write a review to clarify some of the other complaints on this watch. First, the watch as most say is very good looking, its hard to tell from the picture but the metal is two toned. The outside columns of the band as well as the bulk of the face are a brushed duller metal that looks smooth and the center of the band is polished. There is just enough gold to strike a contrast but isn’t overdone at all. It is a very good looking watch and its not too too heavy. Further the 3 dials on the face as well as the coloring set the watch of nicely.

As to the alarm its not hard to tell when its set if you read the short instructions that come with the watch. You pull the dial out once and you hold the bottom button down, the alarm hands will rotate automatically until they hit the current time, then you push the dial back. You now know the alarm is not on if it reads right around the current time (the alarm hands will move with the hands on the face when it is not set). If its set to another hour then the alarm is on…

Its a great watch for the price range and worth the price you’ll pay at the sale prices. There are of course better watches at higher prices but thats a different review for a different time.

Pros:

  • Stands out from other watches in terms of looks (looks even better on)
  • High quality sapphire dial won’t scratch

Cons:

Seiko SNA548 Summary:

You will not be disappointed in getting this watch. It can be worn to any kind of event and will get noticed; not only because it’s a nice looking watch, but because it’s a different looking watch.

The convex design of the dial and the first links makes a big difference and really draws my eye. But I think this Seiko SNA548 customer said it best:

“So if you’re looking for a high quality, reliable, and beautiful watch then this is a great choice. You will not be disappointed.”

Finding a good masculine watch is like is trying to find a good man-difficult. Both should be strong, stylish and always there for you. The good news is that the timepiece does exist; it is the the Seiko Men’s SNA 283 Alarm Chronograph Black Ion.

The round black dial is accented with gold tone Arabic numerals, dial markers and silver-tone luminous hands. The bezel is also black with studded accents and is stationary.

“Considering I tend to forget to take it off when I do home projects and the like, the fact it shows little to no wear, is a testament to the quality of construction. If you’re looking for a beautiful watch with excellent craftsmanship, this is the one.”

This watch has a date function on the number three. A dark gray band of titanium/carbon/nitride plating with gold highlights brings the look altogether. It will really holds up well and will last a long time.

In addition, it offers a stopwatch and an alarm that some find useful. The color is very unique since most are usually gold or silver. But, it is a little heavier than most watches and it could take some getting used to. Also, what is usually the second hand is actually used for the stopwatch.

Seiko SNA283 Features:

  • Reliable Japanese-quartz movement
  • Strong Hardlex crystal protects dial from scratches
  • Case diameter: 40 mm
  • Titanium case; black dial; date function; chronograph functions
  • Water resistant up to 330 feet (100 M)

Seiko SNA283 Customer Comments:

When shopping around for a new watch, this model fit the bill perfectly. Analogue face, with additional functions (date, stopwatch, alarm), waterproof, in a perfectly sized case.

The bonus is the finish – black (very dark grey?) with gold details. I thought all metal cased watches these days are silver or gold with little variation, so it was a nice surprise to find this model.

One slight gotcha – what appears to be the “second” hand on the face is not actually the second hand. It is used for the stopwatch. There is a smaller face (located at 9 o’clock on the main dial) that counts the seconds. A little odd, but not a big deal.

Still very happy with the product. All this and got it half price from Amazon. Nice one.

Pros:

  • Strong and reliable clasp
  • Accurate timekeeping and quiet with the Swiss-Quartz movement

Cons:

Seiko SNA283 Summary:

Overall, you won’t find a more masculine or original looking watch than the Seiko SNA283. The watch has great readability at night with the luminous hands. It is very durable and high quality. It will definitely be a welcomed gift for someone close or for yourself!

seiko sna283 watch band

A tachymeter is an instrument used to tell the time and distance to an object. In this age of electronics and automation does a pilot really need a full fledged tachymeter watch? Probably not but many pilots do still enjoy doing their own pre-flight planning and navigational tasks. Many others still like use aviators watches to get to the terminal on time and in style. The Seiko SND253 aviator watch can satisfy both tastes.

“I would recommend this watch to anybody needing a black face within a lower budget, but does not want garbage!”

The sleek steel casing and bands is the quality that Seiko pilot’s watches have become famous for. The bezel on this model features a rotary compass and slide rule for manual flight planning and other in flight conversions.

The scratch resistant crystal and black face with luminous hands give this watch a sophisticated look that would look good while flying or in formal attire. While the stainless steel band is great to look at, it should be noted that it would have to be taken to a jeweler to make fitted adjustments.

Video Sneak Peak of the Seiko SND253:

Seiko SND253 Features:

  • Quality Japanese-Quartz movement
  • Hardlex crystal
  • Case diameter: 42 mm
  • Stainless-steel case; Black dial; Date function
  • Water-resistant to 330 feet (100 M)

Pros:

  • Great watch design with very good readability
  • The Japanese quartz keeps great time
  • Long lasting battery

Cons:

  • The E6-B rule bezel is incomplete.  For a perfect calculation, you must have a “mirror” of the main functions of the rule bezel printed within the watch
  • Need a special tool to resize band (Probably have to take it down to your local jeweler)

Seiko SND253 Customer Review:

I’ve had this watch for about two years now, and I don’t think there has been a day since that it hasn’t been on my wrist, mainly because it is so versatile. I wear it with jeans/t-shirt outfits as well as my most expensive suits.

The watch is very stylish, and the quality, looks, and features are what you would typically find on watches in the $300-$400 range. As evidenced in the picture, the watch is a classic black-faced chronograph. There is also a nice, red second hand that counts off the seconds when the chronograph is activated.

The timekeeping has been excellent, and I am still on the original battery. The documentation that came with the watch was very good, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it came with a decent-quality case (though I wear mine so frequently that I don’t bother storing it). I haven’t mastered the slide-rule calculator, but there is the capacity to do some rather advanced mathematical calculations.

It is quite possible that you will need to have a link removed to get the watch to fit properly. All of this depends on the size of your wrist, obviously, but even if an adjustment is required, it will not cost much to have it done by any jeweler. Of course, if you have the time, tools, and inclination, you can do this yourself.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, accurate, and stylish timepiece at a great price, it’s tough to do much better than this one.

Seiko SND253 Summary:

Even though modern aviation equipment has made the use of a pilot’s watch in the cockpit overkill, there is something to be said for having backup plans for everything. This Seiko SND253 appears to be up to the task.

It’s got it all; quality, style and function. Very highly recommended and available at a great price.

The Seiko SKX173 Automatic Dive Urethane Strap Watch is widely regarded as one of the best classic dive watches available. The watch has great visibility with the white hands and markers on the black background.

Aswell as the looks though, one of the main things people love about this watch is the comfort. Mostly this comes from the Polyurethane band which feels great on the skin and is perfect for diving. Let’s have a quick look at the features.

Seiko SKX173 Features:

  • Automatic movement; functions without a battery; powers automatically with the movement of your arm
  • Strong Hardlex crystal protects dial from scratches
  • Stainless-steel case; black dial; day-and-date functions
  • Water resistant up to 660 feet (200 M)

Seiko SKX173 Consumer Review:

The nighttime luminosity is excellent, the watch uses Seiko’s Lumibrite, which is an organic luminous material. It is not radioactive and works very well. In any ambient light, the matte black dial with clear, tasteful luminous markers and dissimilar hands ensure that you always have the time at a glance. The absence of shiny metal surrounds for the hour markers keeps the dial look clean. The large arrow shaped minute hand is effectively differentiated from the hour hand so that I never confuse the two.

Luminosity of dial and hands are roughly equal. If anything, the hands appear brighter. The luminous dot and bold triangle on the bezel also assures that you are able to track elapsed time in any lighting condition. The 120 click unidirectional bezel moves smoothly and with just the right tension to assure that accidental turns are minimized. I use that feature every day. I find a watch without a rotating bezel to be less useful unless it is a chronograph. Exposure to sunlight or light high in UV (fluorescent, for example) charges the luminous material. I have no trouble seeing the time at night. The flat crystal sits slightly below the bezel, which should help prevent scratches. Though, you can catch a reflection from it if the light hits it just right. I like a day and date function on a watch. Most diver’s watches don’t display the day. I love the blue Saturday and red Sunday. I like that there is not a ring around the date window, again a very clean design. The absence of a date magnifier keeps the look classic and businesslike

For a watch this large, it is surprisingly comfortable. My wrist measures 6 1/2″ around, so I have relatively small wrists. My Omega Seamaster GMT was as large, yet the back so flat that this was a constant issue. My Rolex GMT had a sharper, smaller crown with coarser serrations, but sits high enough so that is not a problem. The SKX173 crown guard is a visually delightful and wonderfully functional design that I have not seen work as well in any other watch. A terrific feature that is underreported, IMHO. I remember thinking, on taking the watch out of the box, “Now this is a crown guard…” It has never snagged on anything. Even if you don’t scuba dive, a diver’s watch has a tougher, thicker case /crystal and excellent sealing system, affording maximum protection for the movement within. It just makes sense if you want trouble free operation.

Pros:

  • The rotator bezel gives you the option of a countdown feature; all you have to do is turn the 0 indicator to the minute
  • Great visibility under water
  • Has an auto-winding mechanism

Cons:

  • Some have complained that it runs fast

Seiko SKX173 Watch Summary:

The  Seiko SKX173 Automatic Dive Urethane Strap Watch is a nicely weighted, highly quality dive watch. It’s popularity is well deserved and if your looking for a nice looking dive watch that isn’t too steeply priced, this is probably the watch for you. Seiko is a very well respected brand who don’t skimp on quality, so you’ll have this watch for a while.

It’s got the looks, it’s got the function it’s got the comfort. The only reason it hasn’t been rated 5 stars is because of the problems reported by some who complain the watch runs fast. These complaints are very rare however and are mostly dude to people buying from bad sellers. It’s the sort of watch perfect for business men or women who want to impress and be able to have a watch that can take some action.

The Seiko SKX007K2 Diver’s Automatic Watch is a bit of an all rounder. It’s definitely a decent dive watch, especially for the price and you’ll be able to wear it at social functions, because it still looks great.

It powers itself with the movement of your arm with the help of the Seiko kinetic direct drive. There are a few drawbacks with this watch though, I’ll get to that a bit latter. For now let’s have a look at the main features of the watch.

Seiko SKX007K2 Features:

  • Quality Japanese Automatic movement; Functions without a battery; Powers automatically with the movement of your arm
  • Hardlex crystal
  • Case diameter: 46 mm
  • Stainless-steel case; Black dial; Date-and-day functions
  • Water-resistant to 660 feet (200 M)

Seiko Consumer review By Gerard:

This watch has the cleanest, most readable face of any watch on the market today. Even for middle-aged eyes, the time is easy to see at a glance in almost any light. The metal band, often maligned by reviewers, is actually a very attractive copy of the Rolex-style “jubilee” band, with large side-links in brushed stainless steel and inner small links of mirror-polished stainless steel. The case is a flowing sculpture which alternates brushed- and polished-stainless surfaces.
I own two: one is a dark-blue face with blue and red bezel, and the other is as pictured here, with a black face and bezel. The blue-face watch, I have had for four years, while the black-face watch is a recent purchase. I retained the steel bracelet with the first watch, but with my new black watch, I fitted a German-made Hirsch waterproof black leather strap. Both get compliments. The older blue watch is a galloper, gaining approximately seven seconds per day. After a couple of weeks of “break-in” wear, the new black watch has settled-in slow, losing about four seconds per day. YOU WILL NOT GET “QUARTZ ACCURACY” FROM THESE WATCHES. They WILL run, when fully-wound, with a 36-48 hour power reserve, and they will run year after year without any servicing.
Once broken-in, these watches will run CONSISTENTLY fast or slow, without detectable variance. Learn your watch and adjust it accordingly at strict intervals, and you will be able to navigate by the stars for weeks at a time, even without an outside time reference. Pictures do not do justice to this watch – it is beautiful, functional, and spare of style so that it won’t be out of fashion when you pass it to your heir.

Pros:

  • Looks like a watch that could cost easily 5 times the price
  • Very clean and readable face
  • Holds its own in social environments
  • Long life expectancy

Cons:

  • The only drawback is the weak band, it is too light and does not feel as substantial as the watch itself
  • Some people have received watches that run fast, these are usually bought from bad sellers though

Seiko SKX007K2 Summary:

Overall this is a good watch for the money, the Seiko SKX007K2 Diver’s Automatic Watch has a few faults, but for the price these are very minor. The cheap wristband is why this watch only scores 3 out of 5.
But, it looks great, it’ll take a few knocks and the screen is easily readable. But as always when your thinking of buying a watch, you’ve got to consider how it’s going to make you feel. Would you feel good with this around your wrist? :)

Bam! The Seiko “Orange Monster” really grabs your attention. It’s a very solid watch, this thing is definitely not going to break on you, the stainless steel beast can take a few knocks.

The watch is pretty clever because it winds itself with the movement of your wrist, this means you will never have to change the battery, not to shabby huh?

The incredibly bright orange dial is very easy to read in dark and light conditions.

Seiko Orange Monster Consumer Review

By: Shaka Zulu

Bought the watch from Amazon Sunday evening and it arrived on Thursday evening with the 5-day delivery service. … The quality and workmanship are excellent for a price in this range. For example, the second and minute hands line up exactly with the hash marks; when the second hand hits 12, the minute hand is algined precisely with the minute hash mark. Wow, I’ve seen $1000 Swiss quartz watches that don’t do that.

The assembly of all the components look top notch. The rotating bezel has a precision feel and the click-stops align exactly with the hash marks on the dial. The alphanumeric markings, Lumbrite markers, and hands appear of high quality. Seiko’s cost savings is in the omission of hacking of the second hand, but slight backwards pressure does stop it for setting the time.

Also, the black-on-white day and date although easy to read appears to be imprinted on cheapy white plastic. The bracelet has solid stainless steel links, but the weight and chrome finish are slightly on the budget side. The watch appears to run fast by about 1 second each day, which is pretty good for a mechanical watch since I had a Timex quartz with an analog face that ran fast by about the same increment.

I love the orange face and chrome bezel with recessed, black painted numerals and hash marks. The watch supplied by Amazon came with a Seiko box, instructions and warranty and does not appear to be a gray market watch. I saw the watch for cheaper on eBay but they were coming from overseas, so I paid a few bucks more from Amazon located in the US. All in all, I am very satisfied with this Seiko watch and Amazon service.”
